About Cosmetology

Compensation

In the beauty industry, an employee may expect to be compensated through one of the following: an independent contractor, an hourly wage, commission, or owning a salon. A successful cosmetologist or one employed in a related field may expect a minimum earning of $12,000 to $15,000 a year. A Manicurist can make $16,000 to $22,000 a year, and an instructor can make $25,000 to $30,000. A highly skilled professional dedicated to the profession could earn as much as $40,000 a year. Today, there are many employment opportunities that provide excellent benefits, including paid holidays, insurance, and continuing education.

Physical Demands

Students entering the beauty college might be adversely affected by long periods of standing or sitting, and by being exposed to chemicals used in the beauty industry. Students whom are affected by these conditions should obtain a doctor’s release before entering the school or continuing school. Examples of such conditions include, but are not limited to: asthma, pregnancy, or allergic reactions to odors from certain chemicals used in the profession. People with health conditions, nervous conditions, or emotional conditions may want to consult a physician before considering enrolling in beauty school.

Safety Requirements

On the first day of class or during orientation, basic safety requirements are discussed. Safety instructions include, but are not limited to, information on how to safely store and use chemicals and equipment associated with the specific course of study. Instructions are an ongoing procedure taught throughout the entire course of study.

Employer Work Ethics

Each student must show professionalism and be prepared to demonstrate work ethics which include, but are not limited to: being punctual, being courteous, professionally dressed, accountable for their actions and being a problem solver.

Licensing Requirements

All graduates must pass two State Board exams. One is in theory, and the other is in practical skills. These exams are conducted by PSI, and there is a charge for each exam. The school will assist you with scheduling the exams. The cost of the State Board exam is the responsibility of the student.

Criminal History Evaluations / State Licensing Disclaimer

The state may refuse to grant a license if a student has been convicted of a crime; committed any act involving dishonesty, fraud, or deceit, or committed any acts that TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF LICENSING AND REGULATIONS (TDLR) considers grounds to deny a license. TDLR denies licensure on the grounds that the applicant knowingly made a false statement of fact required to be revealed in the application for such license. Students who are not U.S. citizens or who do not have documented authority to work in the United States will not be eligible to apply or take the state licensure examination. It is the student’s responsibility to contact TDLR and determine whether their criminal background will hinder their ability to become licensed in the state. Full Time: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am until 3:00 pm, or 8:30 am (approximately 12 months) – 1-year program
Part Time: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am until 11:30 am, or Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:30 am until 3:00 pm – 2-year program
All Classes are taught in ENGLISH Only

Additional Information

Jasper Campus only offers Operator and Manicure. Lufkin Campus offers all programs. If a student requires additional training beyond contracted prices, and additional charge of $250 per week will be assessed. Financial Aid is available to those who qualify.

  • Operator/Class A Barber Program: 1000 Clock Hours (can be completed in 34 weeks)
  • Manicuring Program: 600 Clock Hours (can be completed in 24 weeks)
  • Esthetician Program: 750 Clock Hours (can be completed in 26 weeks)

If you go over your contract there will be a charge of $250 per week paid up front before you clock in. Students with previous hours will be billed as: Operator/Class A Barber $14.50 per hour, Manicure 14.50 per hour, and Esthetician $14.50 per hour. All programs will also have a $100.00 Enrollment Fee and, if applicable, a $1,300.00 fee for book, kit.

Graduate Requirements for All Courses

Further Professionals will be expected to complete the courses within a designated time period. In general, the MAXIMUM TIME to complete is with a cumulative attendance rate of at least 67%.

Receive the required number of clock hours of training. Complete and receive passing grades on all practical graduation requirements and projects. For a student to meet the school requirements, 100% of all practical worksheets must be completed. Satisfactorily pass fail written and practical exams Complete the required theory hours, and Fulfill all financial obligations owed to the school. Once the student has met all these requirements, he/she will receive a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION, OR DIPLOMA. A student cannot graduate without meeting the above graduation requirements.
